It’s been five years since we’ve gotten new music from Avril Lavigne — the artist who I remember embracing during my awkward years. She inspired me to fry my hair with a flatiron every day before middle school. I never bought makeup until she made black eyeliner a thing. In a sea of blondes (sorry Britney, Christina, Jessica — I love you), Avril was different. She went against the grain and taught us all to be a little weird, all while dominating the TRL countdown with hits like “Complicated,” “Sk8er Boi,” and “My Happy Ending.”
Thankfully, both Avril and I have moved on from days of raccoon eyes and teen angst. Her latest single,”Head Above Water” is far more mature, but chronicles her battle with Lyme disease. With Avril’s first single debuting 16 years ago, her fans have grown up alongside her and have surely experienced struggles of their own. This song is a sobering reminder that we all aren’t kids anymore, and life’s problems are much more… complicated… than not having a date to the prom. Anyone can relate to this song and its message of hope and perseverance. It is a must-listen.
